Top 10 Magical Books that I Would Recommend for a Non-reader

 - GUEST POST BY Pavarti K Tyler

  1. Midnight’s Children by Salmon Rushdie – It’s been a while since I read this but magic is present in the life of Saleen Sinai who was born at the exact moment of India’s independence his entire life. His heart and body are inextricably connected to the events of his country and he is telepathicly connected to the other children born at that witching hour who also possess magical gifts.
  2. Stardust by Neil Gaiman – One of the only books I’ve ever read with Fairies as characters which I didn’t want to throw out a window. Written in very high enlish prose, Stardust takes a while to get into but is worth the read.
  3. The Gaia Wars by Kenneth Bennett (Indie Author Alert!) – An intelligent and engaging Middle Grade book which flirts with sci-fi, fantasy and lit fic. The story is tied together by the magical presence of Gaia herself.
  4. The Odyssey by Homer – Cyclops, Sirens, Witches and Gods, The Odyssey is the original magical tale!
  5. The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis – Mythos is tied with magic in this series, giving the reader insight into human nature. The magical elements heighten the themes of good and evil to epic proportions.
  6. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle – Another Middle Grade book which makes use of science and the fantastic to tell a larger than life story. Magic is all around us, and those who can tap into it are able to experience the most amazing things.
  7. Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris – I know, I know, it’s Supernatural Romance, but there are witches in it! And come on, these books are like the best kind of candy, short, sweet, easy to digest and a ton of fun.
  8. The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen – A beautiful and straightforward story of one young woman’s journey to truth. Smart and endearing, magic is sparingly used in this book, but the inclusion is essential to give you this beautiful story.
  9. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles by Haruki Murakami – An undertaking to read, this book offers everything from a good old fashioned mystery, to cultural exploration of war, to failed romance. Psychics and impossible happenstance pull the reader in for a completely unique adventure.
  10. Gilgamesh – The original story of resurrection and love. Gilgamesh is the first story ever written and includes mystical and magical characters. As a species, humans have always longed for the impossible.

Thank you so much for having me on your blog.
